What isDementia and Alzheimer’s?

Dementia is an umbrella term for a decline in cognitive function severe enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, characterized by progressive memory loss and cognitive decline.

How Dementia and Alzheimer’s Develop
These conditions typically develop gradually. Alzheimer’s, for example, begins with mild memory lapses and can progress to severe cognitive impairment, affecting reasoning, language, and the ability to perform everyday tasks.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis involves a thorough medical history, cognitive tests, brain imaging (like MRI or CT scans), and sometimes blood tests to rule out other conditions.
Treatment Options
While there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s or most forms of dementia, treatments can help manage symptoms. These may include medications to improve cognition, therapies to support mental health, and lifestyle changes.

Frail Care and Support
As dementia progresses, frail care becomes essential. This involves specialized care to assist with daily activities, mobility support, and ensuring comfort and safety.

Costs of Care
The financial burden of dementia care can be significant, often including costs for medical treatments, in-home care, or residential care facilities.
Progression and Challenges
Over time, individuals may experience severe cognitive decline, loss of mobility, difficulty swallowing, and other challenges that require comprehensive support.
