Every family has a story. Ours is one shaped by loss, quiet strength, and an enduring resilience.
My father was born on 31 December 1954. At just eight months old, he lost his father and grew up without him, alongside four siblings, in profound poverty. From a young age, he learned hardship, loss, and the weight of responsibility. Despite these challenges, he became a man of remarkable integrity and dedication.
In 1990, my sister Sonia was born. Her birth was marked by tragedy: the umbilical cord had wrapped around her neck, causing severe oxygen deprivation and resulting in cerebral palsy. Doctors predicted she wouldn’t survive long. Yet she did — defying all odds. Her life became a testament to our family’s resilience, as we navigated countless medical treatments and the constant uncertainty of her health.
As the years went by, new challenges emerged. My mother was diagnosed with diabetes around the age of 30, and over time, her condition worsened, requiring insulin and careful management. In 2002, while living in Gauteng, she suffered a heart episode that led to the placement of a stent. In 2004, in Limpopo, she required additional stents due to another episode.
The financial strain was relentless. My father, who had once held a stable job, faced unemployment when the company he worked for collapsed. Despite his efforts to find new employment, the years brought ongoing struggle, eventually leading to financial instability and living on a farm with minimal income.
In the midst of these trials, my mother’s health continued to decline. Between 2018 and 2026, she suffered three strokes. One of these strokes led to a fall, resulting in a dislocated shoulder and a cracked collarbone, adding to the burden of care.
Now, living in a church provided by a compassionate pastor, my parents rely on limited government grants and the kindness of others. My sister’s chronic health issues and my mother’s dementia mean constant medical needs, and my father’s cancer adds yet another layer of difficulty.
Through it all, our family’s story is one of unbreakable bonds, unspoken love, and a profound strength that has carried us through the darkest times. This platform is a testament to that resilience, and to the hope that we can help each other, even in the toughest of times.
